Ubajee vs Brahminy: Overnight Hiking Near Brisbane

Ubajee or Brahminy? Choosing an Overnight Walk Near Brisbane
3 ottobre 2026

Choose Ubajee for a shorter walk into a hinterland campsite, or Brahminy when your group is prepared for a much longer day on Cooloola’s sandy tracks. Both need advance planning and a booked camping permit. A one-person tent gives you your own sleeping space while travelling with companions: Queensland Parks advises against walking alone on both Great Walks.

Ubajee versus Brahminy: compare the walking commitment

Planning point Ubajee Brahminy
Approach Delicia Road entrance, Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk Noosa North Shore entrance, Cooloola Great Walk
Distance and time 5.1km one way; allow 2–3 hours 17.3km one way; allow 6 hours
Track grade Grades 3 and 4 Grade 4
Camping surface Soil and leaf litter Sand in cleared heathland

These are different outings, even though both finish at walk-in camps. The shorter Ubajee approach is not automatically suitable for inexperienced walkers. Match the route to everyone’s fitness, navigation skills and ability to carry overnight equipment. Official walking times need extra allowance for breaks, meals and delays. Check the Sunshine Coast route notes or Cooloola walking guide before organising your group.

Book the campsite and organise the return

Ubajee walkers’ camp has 12 sites, a toilet and platform seats. Book your camping permit before setting out, especially around weekends and holidays. Open fires are prohibited; use a fuel or gas stove subject to current restrictions. Pack drinking water and a treatment method rather than treating a campsite facility as a guaranteed water supply.

Brahminy walkers’ camp has eight sandy sites, a maximum of two people per site and a one-night stay limit. Book and pay for your camping permit in advance. Water is untreated and mobile coverage is absent at the camp. Neither Great Walk entrance provides overnight parking, so arrange transport and parking separately. Your return day needs the same attention as the walk in.

Plan for spring warmth and summer rain

October and November are spring in southeast Queensland; December is summer. Brisbane’s historical climate statistics show rising average daytime temperatures through these months. They are seasonal background, not a forecast for your trip or an elevated campsite. Choose your sleeping system and clothing using the destination forecast close to departure.

Cooloola’s official guidance expects damp to very wet tracks from December to March. Hinterland creek crossings can become dangerous during heavy rain. Most Australian thunderstorms occur in the warmer months, and BOM explains that every thunderstorm brings lightning danger. Check forecasts, warnings, fire restrictions and park alerts; postpone when conditions warrant it. A tent cannot make camping in severe storms safe.

Choose a shelter you can pitch with your carried kit

The Lanshan 1 is a double-wall, trekking-pole-supported option requiring one compatible 120–125cm pole. Its listed 740g minimum is a starting point for comparison: add the support, pegs, guy lines and any chosen footprint when planning your carried load. Check the selected inner and package contents before ordering.

The Taiji 1 uses a dedicated frame and has a listed 1,450g minimum. It may suit walkers who prefer that support system. Freestanding construction still needs appropriate anchoring and guying; sandy ground does not remove that requirement. Practise with suitable anchors before heading to Brahminy, and confirm any footprint arrangement for your chosen configuration.

If you choose the single-wall Lanshan 1 Pro, allow time for silicone-compatible seam sealing before use unless completed sealing has been confirmed. Practise a full pitch at home and pack dry storage for your sleeping bag and clothes.

Two questions before booking

Can I walk either route alone with a one-person tent?

Queensland Parks advises against walking alone on both walks. Organise companions and leave your route, expected return and emergency plan with a reliable contact. Read the Cooloola safety guidance when planning remote communications and water.

Does a four-season inner make summer storms manageable?

No. Mesh and solid inners change ventilation and draft protection; the label does not establish a storm or snow rating. Make the weather decision first, then choose the inner, sleeping system and complete shelter kit for the conditions.

Once your group has chosen the route, compare the Lanshan 1 configuration against the supports, anchors and floor protection you intend to carry.
