Check the coating on the surface you intend to seal. Several TFS pages explicitly call for hand sealing of a double-sided silicone fly. Stars 2 Pro's description, by contrast, says it is already seam taped. Neither the TFS brand name nor a “5000 mm” fabric figure answers the seam-treatment question for every model.
An important mismatch in the retailer's service page
At the research date, Lanshanhike's TFS sealing-service page names Gear Aid Seam Grip FC for double-sided silicone fabrics. GEAR AID's FC product instructions explicitly exclude silicone-treated fabrics. Its SIL product is intended for silicone-treated materials. This is a direct source conflict, not evidence that a particular delivered tent was treated incorrectly.
Before ordering that service, ask which exact sealant will be applied to your selected fly and whether the service description has been corrected. Do not repeat its promise that FC bonds permanently to a silicone surface. For DIY work, follow the compatible sealant's own instructions and the tent maker's guidance for the precise surface.
Separate fly fabric, floor coating and seams
Enran 2, Pangolin Pro and several other listings describe a double-silicone fly but a PU-containing floor. One treatment cannot be assumed appropriate for both. A “silicone/PU” description also differs from “silicone on both sides.” If the specification does not say which coating faces inward, request that information rather than choosing by fabric fibre alone.
The product tables give hydrostatic-head figures for fabrics. They do not establish a whole-tent rainfall duration, a wind-driven-rain limit or a guarantee about every seam. The distinction matters particularly for Enran 1: its embedded retailer image states a 3000 mm fly and 2000 mm floor, while the current brand page gives different values. Confirm the batch specification before making a rating-based purchase.
A preparation sequence that avoids guesses
- Identify the exact model, fly option and coating surface.
- Confirm whether the supplied seams are taped or need treatment; inspect the delivered shelter.
- Use a sealant explicitly compatible with that surface and follow its application and curing instructions.
- Allow full curing under the specified conditions; do not transfer a generic four-hour website instruction to every formula or temperature.
- Pitch and check the shelter in a controlled setting before relying on it for a remote trip. Investigate stitch-line seepage separately from moisture collecting on fabric.
Do not confuse condensation with a leaking seam
Moisture on the inner face of a fly does not by itself identify failed waterproofing. A seam can need attention while the rest of the fly is sound, and an intact shelter can still accumulate condensation. Will a 5000 mm fly keep me dry in every storm?
That is a stated fabric rating, not a verified operating limit for the complete tent. Seam treatment, pitching and weather exposure also matter.
There are droplets inside. Does that prove the tent leaks?
No. First distinguish general internal condensation from water entering at a particular seam or damaged area.
