Why Does Your TFS Tent Need Seam Sealing?

TFS tents are built from fabric coated with silicone on both sides. This double-sided silicone treatment is what makes the tent strong, light, and long-lasting — but it comes with an unavoidable trade-off: the fabric is too slippery for machines to grip, so factory seam taping is physically impossible. The seams are sewn with thread, not taped, which means the needle holes rely on the expanding seam thread to block water.

This works well in most conditions — but unless there is a heavy rainstorm that lasts for a long time, there may be a little leakage through the stitch holes. Seam sealing closes that gap for good: the sealant fills every needle hole and creates a waterproof bond between the panels of fabric, while also adding strength to the sewn seams.

• Gear Aid Seam Grip FC is a professional-grade sealant formulated specifically for nylon and polyester tents — flexible, durable, and trusted by thru-hikers worldwide.
• Seams are treated on the exterior of the shelter where water hits first; the sealant dries translucent and bonds permanently to silicone-coated fabric.
• The sealed tent is then left to cure for about 3 days before shipping, so it arrives ready for the trail.

What to Expect — Honest Notes Before You Order

• Because sealing is done by hand, application may be slightly uneven in places, and excess sealant may leave small visible marks. This is normal for any hand-sealed silnylon tent and does not affect performance.
• The sealant dries translucent, but faint marks on the seams will remain visible after application.
• A properly sealed tent performs excellently in rain, but a hand-sealed seam still can't be guaranteed to match a fully factory-taped double-wall tent in the very worst sustained storms.
• This service is only relevant for silicone-coated (silnylon/silpoly) tents. Tents with PU coating or fully taped seams do not need it.

Why can't TFS tents be factory taped?

Double-sided silicone fabric is extremely slippery — machines cannot grip and fix the fabric reliably during the taping process. That's why only hand-applied sealant works for this type of fabric, and why most big brands avoid it entirely.

Will my tent leak without seam sealing?

Probably not in normal rain. TFS tents use expanding seam thread that swells when wet to block needle holes. But in prolonged, heavy storms, a small amount of seepage through stitches is possible — seam sealing removes that risk entirely.

How long does the service take?

About 3 days of curing time, so sealed orders ship roughly 3 days later than standard orders.

4. Does the price include transportation fees?

When you use the online system to generate a shipping quote for your order, please add the required quantity of items to your shopping cart. Then, click to the checkout page, where you can find delivery prices for different delivery services. (Currently, shipping and import taxes are free for Europe and the United States, except for Norway. Due to relevant laws and regulations, we cannot prepay taxes for shipments to Norway, so Norwegian customers will need to pay approximately £8 in import duties.)

5. How to cancel an order?
